Celebrating 37 years of Cricket in the Macarthur Region

Magpies Cricket Club aims to promote, foster and encourage the playing of cricket in the true spirit of sportsmanship. Magpies strives to develop all players to achieve their full potential by providing good coaching and playing facilities and at the same time creating an environment where players enjoy themselves, both on and off the field.

Club History

During the winter of 1987, a number of parents while following their sons at soccer discussed the possibility of forming a new cricket club to play in the local junior cricket competition. Wilf Gruenert was the person who had the idea of approaching the management of the Western Suburbs Leagues Club (Campbelltown) about forming a junior cricket club and to seek a grant to purchase equipment under their banner for the 1987-1988 season.

The first meeting to form the club was held on Saturday afternoon 20 June 1987. At that meeting was Wilf & Sue Gruenert, Peter & Julie Senior, Bob & Colleen Surmon, Tony & June Stuart.  Following this meeting a committee was formed with Wilf Gruenert - President, Peter Senior—Vice President, Bob Surmon - Treasurer, Julie Senior - Secretary, June Stuart - Club Registrar and Tony Stuart—Equipment officer.

The club was to be called Magpies Cricket Club.

Following the creation of the committee, Wests Leagues Director, Alderman Bob O’Sullivan, provided a grant of $2,500 at a special ceremony. A Leagues Club official said:

“The Club was strongly committed to the youth of Campbelltown. We are extremely pleased to foster summer sports along with our successful junior rugby league in winter.”

The grant was used to purchase equipment, which came from Kingsgrove Sports in which Harry Solomons of Kingsgrove Sports extended our credit to monthly payments to allow us to purchase our requirements at the beginning of the season, thus establishing a strong relationship with both organisations that have continued to exist to this day.
